There are many health coverage programs that will cover low-income patients. Almost all Californians that are experiencing homelessness will qualify for Medi-Cal (Medicaid). Ensuring that patients are enrolled into a health care coverage program like Medi-Cal will make a huge difference in the services and care you can provide them.  If your program is located in a different state, look into the eligibility rules for your area as it will vary.

Medi-Cal can be a complex and bureaucratic program that is difficult to navigate for most people—especially with the added complexity of being unsheltered. It is important to have the internal infrastructure to be able to enroll, assist with utilization and retain benefits. If there is not internal capacity, connecting with a community based organization that has expertise in this area will be key. Patients may also have Medicare or coverage through a local program.
