November 13, 2023

We are sharing ways to understand your personal risk for type 2 diabetes. This information is provided by Ligaya Scarlett, FNP, clinical lead of Venice Family Clinic’s Mayer B. Davidson, MD Diabetes Program.

Did you know that in Los Angeles County, 1 in 10 people have type 2 diabetes?

Diabetes can lead to various health complications such as heart problems, kidney damage, eye problems, nerve damage, and more.

Some of the risks for developing type 2 diabetes are:

  • Being over 45 years old;
  • Being Hispanic or Latino, African American, Asian American, Native American, or Pacific Islander;
  • Or having a parent, brother or sister who has type 2 diabetes.

You may also be at higher risk if you:

  • Don’t get a lot of exercise;
  • Live with obesity or excess weight;
  • Or have a history of diabetes during pregnancy.

If any of these risk factors apply to you, make sure you speak with a health care provider about it as soon as possible.
While you wait for your appointment, you can see what your risk may be by taking a free 60-second test from the American Diabetes Association.
Now is a perfect time to know your risk and take proactive steps to lower your chance of developing type 2 diabetes.
