Information about the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine

As of 4/13/21, Venice Family Clinic will pause giving the Johnson & Johnson (J&J) COVID-19 vaccine. Until further notice, we will provide the Moderna vaccine at all COVID-19 vaccine appointments. Please note the Moderna vaccine requires 2 doses, spaced 28 days apart.

What’s happening?

  • The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommended that everyone pause in giving out the J&J vaccine for now.

Why?

  • There have been 6 reported cases of unusual types of blood clots among people who got this vaccine. All 6 cases were women ages 18 to 48. Their symptoms happened 6 to 13 days after getting the vaccine.
  • Please note that these reactions are extremely rare. Nearly 7 million people have gotten the J&J vaccine in the United States to date.

How does this impact you?

  • If you got this vaccine in the last 3 weeks, pay attention for symptoms of these unusual clots, which include severe headaches, abdominal or leg pain, and shortness of breath. If you notice any of these symptoms, please contact your medical provider. Patients who do not have a medical provider can call 2-1-1 to connect with one.

What happens next?

  • The FDA and CDC will be reviewing the data. They expect to complete their review in a few days. Then they will issue new recommendations.

How should I report a side effects from the vaccine?

  • If you experience side effects after any vaccine, please report them to the FDA/CDC Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS). The VAERS toll-free number is 1-800-822-7967 or report online at https://vaers.hhs.gov/reportevent.html.
